Back
in the late eighties, Terry Tyo, publisher
of Storyteller, asked himself why, whenever he wanted
to read short stories, he was turning to American magazines and
books to find them. And what he was finding was magazines and
books devoted to only one type of story. Where was the variety?
Although Canada has a reputation for great writers and a wide
and literate audience, he couldn't find a Canadian magazine devoted
to the short story that published mystery, or adventure, or even
comedy. Thus was born the concept of Storyteller.
Storyteller first appeared on the stands in the summer
of 1994.
We publish an average of forty stories a year, ranging from
Ellis Award winning Matt
Hughes' thrillers to Aurora nominee Stephanie
Bedwell-Grime's comic romantic fantasies. Our stories have
been reprinted in everything from the Journey Prize anthologies
to educational texts.
In 1996 we introduced the Great Canadian
Story Contest. Here, we challenge writers to tell us a
story that could happen "only in Canada." The results
are always surprising, and the best comprise our special Summer
issue, which is included in your subscription.
While we specialize in variety, there are some things we don't
publish. We stay away from the extremes of genre. When you read
a Storyteller story, you won't find yourself wondering
what's going on, or what else you should know to understand it.
When we tickle readers' minds with a puzzle, it's the who-dunnit
type of puzzle.
We can't predict exactly what you'll find in an issue of Storyteller.
There's usually something to make you laugh, and often something
to make you cry. We can guarantee characters you'll want to come
back to, and Canadian scenes and situations that could be familiar,
or a whole new experience. You might find yourself hiking through
an old-growth forest in B.C., or falling in love on the prairies,
or tailing someone with a secret in Newfoundland, or sharing
bagels with an alien in Toronto.
For less than the price of a hardcover novel, you can purchase
a year's subscription to Storyteller.
That's about forty new stories by Canada's best writers, delivered
to your home four times a year. And you won't find
Storyteller at your local book or magazine store - it's available
exclusively through subscription.
